La gauche politique est arrivée au pouvoir en 1981, au beau milieu de son désarroi intellectuel et en pleine liquéfaction du marxisme qui, même s'il était loin d'être hégémonique et majoritaire chez les intellectuels français, représentait depuis la Libération un pôle de référence dominant. À la différence du Front populaire, en 1936, aucune vraie mobilisation des intellectuels n'a accompagné l'arrivée pourtant miraculeuse de François Mitterrand à la présidence de la République. Ce n'était pas seulement le marxisme qui était en déconfiture, mais toutes les autres grandes formes d'interprétation de la réalité humaine et historique.
